While out walking the paths across the Montreal Estate in Kent in 2018, I saw a small metal ball. It was covered in a thin layer of surface corrosion, and the ball itself felt extremely heavy for its size. I didn't think much of it, picked it up and took it home for my ecclectic collection of fireplace junk. It was only 7 years later that I looked more closely at the object. It is not truly spherical, weighs 438g (0.97 lbs) rounded up to 1 pound, and measures 38mm or 1.5 inches in diameter. It is magnetic. One side of the object has been flattened; and given the density of the material this must have been done with great force. The object was cleaned with a soft wire brush to remove the surface corrosion.
My initial thoughts were this is a large ball bearing, but later inspection has cast doubt on this theory due to the irregular shape. It is not made from cast iron, nor lead.
A similar object is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (link).
