Object: Martini-Henry rolled brass cartridge case (4 of 6)

This rare fired Martini-Henry .577/450 brass cartridge case was discovered by eye at ground level in a 19th-century rubbish pile on Troodos Mountain, Cyprus. Introduced in 1871, and only in use for a few years, this cartridge was used with the Martini-Henry single-shot rifles. It was subsequently replaced with the drawn brass cartridges we recognise today. The cartridge is badly damaged with no discernable markings, but the thin brass sheet used to roll the side walls can be identified, as can the corroded steel rim to the rear.

The rubbish pile is associated with one of the temporary British summer camps on Troodos Mountain. You can read more about the evolution of these summer camps in this article.

Notes about the collection

I have decided to start the long process of making my collection available to the wider community. This will be a very slow process whcih will at some stage include the digitising of many of my original and rarer technical publications. The purpose of the collection in its current form is to document what I have available.
