Everite Bigsix

The latter part of 2023 involved two discrete activities; I was doing some research on prefabricated Second World War accommodation structures, and I also spent a week in Cornwall. I was pleasantly surprised when one evening these two events coincided. While wandering the shell of what I identified as an intermediate ground controlled intercept (GCI) station outside the village of Crugmeer in Cornwall, that I noticed some manufacturing marks on the corrugated roofing material. The marks read:

“EVERITE” “BIGSIX” A.C. SHEETS.

Having only ever seen a reference to “Bigsix asbestos cement sheets” in construction notes for temporary accommodation, it was rewarding to now have a reference for this material. The sheets are fabricated from asbestos cement sheets, corrugated with ridges at 6-inch intervals; hence the BIGSIX nomenclature.

Another great reference piece to my collection.
